Calvary Chapel and Church of the Transfiguration

  April 2010

“It is the mission of Calvary Chapel and The Church of the Transfiguration to witness to Jesus Christ in worship, study, fellowship and care for our community and world.”

Below segments have been extracted from Wikipedia.

Holy week observes the last week of the earthly life of Jesus Christ ending in his crucifixion on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.  Preparing for Holy Week begins with Sunday of the Passion of our Lord; also know as Palm Sunday.  To commemorate the entrance of the Messiah into Jerusalem, it is customary to bless palm leaves (or other branches, for example olive branches).  The blessing ceremony usually includes the reading of a Gospel account of how Jesus rode into Jerusalem humbly on a donkey and how people placed palms on the ground in front of him.

The days between Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday are known as Holy Monday (or Fig Monday), Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday (sometimes called Spy Wednesday).  The Gospels of these days recount events not all of which occurred on the corresponding days between Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and his Last Supper.

Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, Great and Holy Thursday, and Thursday of Mysteries is the Christian feast or holy day falling on the Thursday before Easter that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17).   The altar of the church is later stripped and to the extent possible, crosses are removed from the church or veiled.

Good Friday, also called Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday, is a holiday observed primarily by adherents to Christianity commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary.  The holiday is observed during Holy Week and often coincides with the Jewish observance of Passover.

Jesus’ final hours on the cross lasted about six hours.  Luke 23:46 – Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”  When he had said this, he breathed his last. Even if music is used in the Liturgy, it is not used to open or close the Liturgy, nor is there a formal recessional (closing procession).  Parishioners exit the church in silence.

Holy Saturday is the day after Good Friday and the day before Easter and the last day of Holy Week.  This day commemorates the day that Jesus Christ’s body lay in the tomb.

Easter, is considered by many to be the most important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year.  According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion.  The biblical account of Jesus’ death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture:  Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.

Alleluia.  Christ is risen.  The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Weight Watcher’s has been meeting at Calvary House each Wednesday morning.  Doors open for weight-in at 8:30 a.m. with the meeting beginning at 9:00 a.m.  The leader has indicated that they were growing each week (bad choice of words), they have more than doubled in size since they started meeting (not good either), they have expanded (no, don’t like that either); whatever!  Attendance continues to thrive.  Please consider telling your friends and neighbors about the meeting and/or coming yourself if you would like to shed a few pounds and/or learn to live a healthy life style.

Times up, now put your pencil down, that means you mister, do not answer anymore questions.  Exchange your paper with a neighbor.

From the archives, “bloopers” from Church Bulletins, compliments of Myrna Sheasley.

Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale.  It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house.  Bring your husbands.

Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help.

Miss Charlene Mason sang, “I will not pass this way again,” giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir.  They need all the help they can get.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall . . . music will follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind.  They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn sing in the park across from the Church.  Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

Just in time for stewardship:  The Associate Minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday:  “I Upped My Pledge – Up Yours!”
